Fortinet falls 26.2% pre-market after results and a lower services outlook
Fortinet was down 26.2% from Wednesday's close in pre-market trading in a Reuters snapshot updated at 13:31 CET on 29 October. It was the largest absolute move in the checked set of US stocks, although the regular session had not yet opened.
The largest confirmed move in the checked set was a 26.2% pre-market decline in Fortinet shares from the 28 October close. The reading comes from a Reuters report updated at 08:31 EDT, or 13:31 CET, on 29 October. It is a pre-open Wall Street snapshot, not a closing price or a regular-session level.
The size of the move set Fortinet apart from the other shares observed. In the same snapshot, ServiceNow fell 19.6%, Marvell Technology 12.4%, Alphabet 10.4% and Caterpillar 9.7%. The comparison measures pre-market changes from the previous close; both the ranking and the values may change after the opening bell.
Fortinet's results were not weak in every area. The company reported $2.078 billion of third-quarter revenue, up 20% year on year, $2.34 billion of billings and $865 million of free cash flow. Product revenue grew 37% to $765 million and service revenue rose 13% to $1.313 billion.
The official guidance comparison provides important context. In July, Fortinet expected $5.180–$5.220 billion of 2026 service revenue. Its third-quarter release now gives a $5.150–$5.170 billion range. At the same time, the company raised its total-revenue and billings outlook. Investors may therefore price the strong current quarter and the lower services reference separately, but the share move alone cannot prove that one factor explains the entire decline.
Pre-market trading usually has less liquidity than the regular session, so the opening gap may narrow, widen or reverse after the bell. Those are scenarios, not a forecast. Why do strong results not guarantee a higher share price?
A price responds to the gap between a report and expectations, not only to revenue growth itself. Investors may place more weight on the revenue mix, services momentum or guidance than on a high result for the quarter just completed.
For Fortinet, total revenue and billings grew, but the full-year service-revenue range moved lower from July. That is a confirmed contrast in the company's documents, not a stand-alone forecast for the share price.
How should a pre-market move be read?
The 26.2% change was measured from the previous close, but it came from trading before the regular session. Lower liquidity and wider spreads can increase volatility, so the later opening price may differ.
A sound market note should always state the reference point, the snapshot time and the trading session. Without those three details, a percentage alone can mislead.
What remains unknown?
It is not yet known whether the decline will persist after Wall Street opens. It is also unsafe to assume that one item in the report explains the entire reaction; expectations, positioning, liquidity and sector-wide moves in software and cybersecurity all matter.
Prodigy lets users analyse such situations educationally with virtual money and simulated trades, without profit promises or pressure to act.
