KOSPI triggers circuit breaker after falling more than 8%

The KOSPI fell more than 8% in early trade, touched 4,911.28 and triggered a 20-minute circuit breaker at 09:03 Seoul time. By 11:30 local time it had pared the decline to 3.9%; these are intraday readings, not a closing level.

The strongest confirmed move of the morning was in the KOSPI. Reuters reported on 6 November 2026 that the index fell more than 8% in early trade to 4,911.28, its lowest in nine months. Korea Exchange triggered a 20-minute circuit breaker at 09:03 Seoul time, or 01:03 CET, temporarily halting stock and derivatives trading. The low and percentage move are measured against the 5 November close; they are not today's closing level.

The move did not remain at its morning extreme. At 11:30 Seoul time, or 03:30 CET, the KOSPI was down 3.9% at 5,174.84. Samsung Electronics was then down 3.23% and SK Hynix 5.30%, after earlier double-digit declines. The two readings show why a timestamp matters as much as the number during volatile trading.

Reuters described the immediate context as a selloff in US technology shares after the midterm election and concerns about the pace of data-centre investment. That is confirmed news context, not proof that one factor explains the entire move. Early trading also featured foreign selling and the unwinding of leveraged positions.

The pressure extended beyond Korea. The Associated Press reported that the Nikkei 225 was down 5.7% by midday in Tokyo after falling more than 6% at the open. That reading was also intraday. European and US markets had not yet opened, so Asia's move cannot be treated as a forecast of their closing levels.

In currencies, the yen acted as a relative haven. Reuters, in a report updated at 04:32 CET, said the yen had earlier strengthened 0.2% to a one-week high of 157.40 per dollar before giving back part of the move. The dollar index was near 101.55 and the euro around $1.1222. These are live Asian-session readings, not fixings or closing rates.

In commodities, spot gold was down 0.6% at $4,063.39 an ounce at 03:48 CET, while remaining 4% higher for the week. Oil rose more than 1% in morning trade but was still heading for a sharp weekly decline. Moves in gold and oil can alter inflation and rate expectations, but they do not transmit to currencies or equities through one automatic rule.

Crypto trades continuously. Binance showed Bitcoin at $76,157.66 and down 5.4% over a rolling 24-hour window in an update timestamped 04:04 CET. A rolling window changes every moment, so it is not equivalent to a stock-market move from the prior close and should not be compared directly with the KOSPI percentage.

The main scheduled event for the rest of the day is the US employment report for October. The official Bureau of Labor Statistics calendar sets the release for 08:30 US Eastern time, or 14:30 CET. The release time is a fact; how the dollar, bonds, commodities, equities and crypto react remains a scenario, not a forecast.

Why does a circuit breaker not end the move?

A circuit breaker pauses trading for a set period so the market can process incoming orders and information. It does not set an equilibrium price and does not guarantee either a rebound or a further decline.

Today's KOSPI illustrates the point: a drop of more than 8% triggered the halt, while the loss narrowed to 3.9% in a later snapshot after trading resumed. Both readings are valid because they describe different moments.

What could matter later today?

The US employment report can change expectations for interest rates. The transmission channel runs through bond yields and the dollar and may then affect equity, gold, oil and crypto valuations.

This is a possible mechanism, not a certainty. The size and direction of any reaction depend on the data, prior expectations, liquidity and other news arriving at the same time.
