US production rises as Strategy faces possible MSCI index removal
US industrial production rose 0.7% month on month in September, while third-quarter manufacturing momentum slowed. New MSCI rules could also remove Strategy from global indexes.
On 16 October 2026, the Federal Reserve reported that US industrial production rose 0.7% month on month in September after a 0.1% increase in August. Manufacturing output increased 0.3%, while capacity utilization rose to 76.9%.
The details were uneven: motor vehicle and parts output fell 3.0% in September, while semiconductor and related-component output rose at a 28.4% annualized rate in the third quarter. Overall manufacturing growth slowed to a 0.7% annualized pace in the third quarter from 5.6% in the second quarter.
Separately, Reuters reported that Strategy could be removed from MSCI indexes under new rules for non-operating companies. MSCI plans to publish the final affected-company list on 11 November, with the rules applying from the close on 30 November. This is a risk, not confirmation that Strategy will be removed.
What exactly did the Fed report show?
The 0.7% rise in total industrial production was larger than the 0.3% manufacturing increase because the index also includes mining and utilities. Utilities output rose 3.5%, helped by air-conditioning demand.
Capacity utilization at 76.9% remained 2.5 percentage points below its 1972–2025 average. One strong monthly reading therefore does not mean resources are fully utilized or establish the economy's future direction.
Why does the mix of the data matter?
Strong semiconductor output illustrates the effect of AI investment, but weaker vehicle production and slower third-quarter manufacturing growth create a mixed picture. Traders should distinguish monthly changes, quarterly momentum and industry-level moves.
The possible mechanism runs both ways: stronger data can support the view that the economy is resilient, while also keeping markets sensitive to interest rates. The report is not a guaranteed buy or sell signal.
How can an index removal affect a stock?
Passive funds that track an index must adjust their portfolios when its membership changes. That means an index decision can affect demand for a crypto-linked company's shares even if bitcoin itself does not move in the same direction.
Strategy previously estimated that exclusion could lead to about $2.8 billion of its stock being sold. Reuters reported this as the company's estimate, not as a confirmed future outflow. Strategy shares were down 4.2% when Reuters reported on Friday.
What changed after the earlier updates?
The morning update focused mainly on Asia, while the afternoon post covered European moves and the US premarket. The new evening information is the official Fed release published at 15:15 CEST and the expanded index-risk story for Strategy during the US session.
These are different transmission channels: macroeconomic data affect the assessment of the economy, while index rules can force capital flows independently of a company's operating results.
