Weekend market map: crypto keeps trading while major exchanges pause

Regular equity sessions in Asia, Europe and the US are closed on Saturday, while crypto continues to trade. Bitcoin was near $81,673 at 05:26 CEST; this guide explains the difference between a live quote and Friday's close, and which news may carry into Monday.

At 05:26 CEST on 17 October 2026, CoinGecko showed bitcoin near $81,673, with a 24-hour range of roughly $80,761–$82,816. This is a snapshot from a market that trades through the weekend, not a forecast or trade signal.

Other asset classes need a different label on Saturday. Nasdaq states that its regular equity session runs Monday through Friday, so Friday's stock, ETF and index levels are not live Saturday prices. Forex and most exchange-traded metals and energy contracts should not be presented as if a fresh Saturday session were underway.

The key mechanism today is the difference between two clocks: crypto can react immediately, while traditional markets price weekend news after reopening. A Saturday bitcoin move does not determine Monday's direction for indexes, currencies or commodities.

What is open and what is closed?

Crypto markets operate around the clock. CME also confirms continuous trading for selected regulated crypto derivatives, with a short Saturday maintenance break. That rule should not be extended to every instrument.

Nasdaq's regular session runs on weekdays from 9:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Eastern Time. There is therefore no new regular US equity close on Saturday. With no normal Saturday cash-equity session in Asia, index levels remain Friday's last available data rather than live weekend quotes.

Asia, currencies and rates: Friday's context

Saturday morning brought no new regular Asian equity session, so the latest context remains Friday's. Reuters reported that the dollar index stood at 101.87 and was heading for a 0.35% weekly decline as markets reduced expectations of another Fed increase.

Fact: the Federal Reserve's official calendar lists Chair Kevin Warsh's discussion with IMF Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva on 15 October. Interpretation: no preview of the next rate move leaves expectations open ahead of the 27–28 October meeting. It does not confirm that meeting's outcome.

Commodities: news can move while the quote is stale

Oil and metals can be affected by geopolitical headlines and supply decisions, but Friday's prices do not automatically become live Saturday quotes. During a weekend, separate a new headline from the last available market price and check the source time.

One reopening scenario is a gap between Friday's close and the first price after the weekend if news accumulates. The direction and size of any move cannot be known in advance.

How should a beginner read a weekend crypto move?

Bitcoin's 24-hour high-low range was about $2,055 in the CoinGecko snapshot. That describes volatility in one window; it is not a measure of an entire portfolio's risk and does not show that the same move will repeat.
