KOSPI falls 5% in a tech sell-off as the BOJ holds at 1.25%

The KOSPI was down 5% and the Nikkei 3% in an intraday Reuters snapshot published at 03:45 CET on 30 October. The Bank of Japan kept the overnight rate around 1.25%, the yen strengthened and an official Binance update confirmed an investigation into a security incident.

The strongest confirmed move in the checked morning set was a 5% decline in South Korea's KOSPI. In a Reuters report published at 02:45 UTC, or 03:45 CET, on 30 October, Japan's Nikkei was down 3% at the same time. These were live-session readings, not closing levels, so they may change before trading ends.

Reuters described pressure on technology shares after declines in US companies linked to artificial intelligence and heavy capital spending. That does not mean a single item explains the entire Asian move: prior valuations, positioning, liquidity and each market's sector mix also matter.

The Bank of Japan kept its target for the uncollateralised overnight rate at around 1.25% by an 8–1 vote. One member proposed 1.50%. The bank also decided to raise the pace of ETF sales from about JPY330 billion to JPY860 billion a year on a book-value basis from January 2027. These are confirmed policy decisions, not a forecast for share prices.

In the same Reuters snapshot, the yen gained about 0.3% to 157.20 per dollar, while the US 10-year Treasury yield fell more than 7 basis points to 4.91%. Lower yields mean higher bond prices; the move shows demand for safer assets but does not guarantee the direction for the rest of the day.

Oil remained elevated. In a separate Reuters snapshot published at 04:07 CET, Brent reached $117.84 a barrel. This is a time-specific price point, not a closing level or a forecast. High energy prices can affect inflation, corporate costs and the currencies of oil-importing economies.

In crypto, an official Binance update dated 30 October gave an initial estimated impact of about $6.3 billion from a security incident, with roughly $3 billion reported frozen on-chain. The exchange temporarily suspended deposits and withdrawals, said it would cover losses and reported no evidence of a private-key leak. These are Binance's preliminary findings; a full technical post-mortem is still due.

Markets will watch Bank of Japan Governor Kazuo Ueda's news conference scheduled for 07:30 CET and Eurostat's preliminary third-quarter GDP flash estimate for the euro area and EU. The ECB kept its three key rates unchanged yesterday. Known decisions and scheduled events are facts; future data and market reactions remain unknown. Why do falling indexes not imply one uniform move?

The KOSPI and Nikkei have different sector, currency and ownership structures. A shared decline may have a similar impulse, but its size depends on technology weightings, prior valuations and each market's liquidity.

The 5% and 3% figures should therefore be read as two separate intraday snapshots, not as a single call to action.

How does a BOJ decision reach currencies and bonds?

An unchanged rate does not mean unchanged expectations. The vote split, inflation communication and faster ETF sales can alter pricing for future rates, the yen and Japanese assets.

Currency reactions and falling US Treasury yields describe the market at a particular moment. They do not forecast the next central-bank decision.

Why is a crypto-exchange incident a market risk?

A pause in deposits and withdrawals can reduce liquidity and make cross-platform arbitrage harder. Even when an exchange says it will cover losses, market participants may cut exposure until the technical facts are clearer.

The official Binance update contains preliminary findings. Confirmed information should be separated from estimates, and any assessment should be updated only when the full report is published.
