AVAX down 2.1% in 24 hours: a Sunday scan of eight cryptocurrencies
On Sunday 18 October at about 14:20 CEST, CoinGecko showed AVAX near $9.74, down 2.1% over 24 hours. This was the largest decline among eight checked cryptocurrencies, not the entire market. We explain the comparison window, snapshot limits and closed stock sessions.
Fact from CoinGecko's page read on Sunday, 18 October 2026 at about 14:20 CEST: Avalanche (AVAX) was near $9.74 and the page showed a −2.1% change over the previous 24 hours. This records the time we read the page, not the timestamp of a particular trade or a forecast for the day's close.
We checked BTC, ETH, SOL, ADA, XRP, DOGE, BNB and AVAX on CoinGecko pages at roughly the same time. AVAX had the largest decline in this set. That does not mean it was the worst performer across all cryptocurrencies; this is a limited scan, not a complete market ranking.
Regular Nasdaq equity and ETF sessions are closed on Sunday. Friday closes are historical reference points, not new Sunday trades. Crypto remains active over the weekend. We do not compare its current rolling 24-hour move with Friday's stock change as if the two readings shared a clock.
How to read −2.1% and the observation time
A 24-hour change compares the currently displayed price with a level about one day earlier. It is a rolling window that can shift even without a new headline as older observations leave the comparison. It is not a return from a Sunday stock-market open or a change from Friday's equity close.
14:20 CEST marks when we checked CoinGecko's page. The aggregator combines venues and may update with some delay. Approximately $9.74 and −2.1% are a dated snapshot, not a fixed price for the whole day.
Facts from a limited scan versus the cause
At roughly the same time, CoinGecko showed ADA near −1.3% and BTC near +0.6% over 24 hours. In that context AVAX near −2.1% was weakest among the eight checked coins. Reading several pages in succession is not the same as observing trades in the exact same second; the ranking is an approximate observation of this set.
We did not establish a specific event that caused this particular 24-hour AVAX decline. A price move by itself does not prove the effect of a statement, volume or sentiment. One possible mechanism, not an established explanation, is that weekend orders can move prices more when liquidity is thinner. We do not forecast the next direction.
Two market clocks and a learning exercise
Nasdaq lists regular trading hours from Monday to Friday. On Sunday stocks and most ETFs have no new regular session, while crypto still trades. The latest visible FX, metals or energy quote need not be a fresh Sunday quote; we do not present it as a live move here.
