Japan exports rise 16.7% year on year: a morning guide to Asia, FX, oil and crypto
Japan's official data show strong September export-value growth but also a trade deficit. We explain the difference between export growth, the trade balance and current market moves.
Japan Customs reported on 21 October 2026 that September exports were worth 10.9723 trillion yen, up 16.7% from a year earlier. Imports rose 18.9% to 11.5088 trillion yen, leaving a trade deficit of 536.5 billion yen.
The data were scheduled for 8:50 JST, or 1:50 CEST. The 16.7% figure is a year-on-year change in nominal export value; it does not mean every sector grew by the same percentage and it is not the percentage move in the Nikkei.
Early in Wednesday's Asian session, Reuters reported the broad MSCI Asia-Pacific ex-Japan index up 1.5%, South Korea's KOSPI up about 4% and the Nikkei 225 up 1.3%. This was a snapshot from reporting updated at 4:10 CEST, not a session close.
1. Exports, imports and the balance are three different numbers
Exports and imports measure flows in opposite directions, while the balance is their difference. Exports can rise strongly while the country still records a deficit if imports are larger in value.
Our educational context: stronger exports can support assessments of foreign demand and some companies, while more expensive energy or raw-material imports can increase costs. The +16.7% headline alone does not determine profits or an index direction.
2. Overnight Asia: a rebound is not yet a close
Reuters reported at 4:10 CEST that the KOSPI was up about 4%, the Nikkei 225 up 1.3% and the broad regional index excluding Japan up 1.5%. These figures describe open sessions and can change before the close.
Our context: US earnings, AI sentiment, energy prices and domestic data can operate at the same time. A shared move does not establish one cause and is not a trade recommendation.
3. Currencies and oil use separate reference points
Reuters' 3:20 CEST currency snapshot put the dollar index at 101.78, USD/JPY near 158.33 and AUD/USD at 0.7013. These are intraday FX readings, not daily closes. The Australian dollar was near a three-week high after an RBA comment about a materially worse inflation outlook.
In the later 4:10 CEST market report, Brent stood at $110.03 a barrel, up 1.1%. Oil can affect inflation and importers' margins, but it also responds to geopolitical and supply news. We do not attribute the whole move to Japan's data.
4. Crypto and today's calendar
At 4:10 CEST, Reuters put bitcoin at $82,988.76, up 0.3%. This is a point-in-time quote with a different trading clock from Asian equity indexes; crypto trades around the clock while stock exchanges have set sessions.
Bank Indonesia concludes its two-day 20–21 October meeting today. The official schedule confirms the decision day, not the outcome or an exact publication time. A possible transmission channel runs through the rupiah, local bonds and rate expectations, but the market response depends on the decision relative to prior expectations.
A learning exercise with Max: label every number
For each number, write down the instrument or indicator, comparison base, time and session status. +16.7% year-on-year exports, +1.3% for the Nikkei during trading and +0.3% for bitcoin are three different measures.
