Oil retreats from a six-month high as Asia starts the week cautiously
Brent was down 1.6% at $114.88 a barrel in Reuters' 01:46 CET snapshot. The Nikkei, KOSPI and Chinese blue chips were lower, the dollar eased slightly and bitcoin remained below $80,000 before a week of Fed, ECB and Bank of Japan meetings.
The morning's clearest move was in oil. In a Reuters snapshot dated 26 October and published at 01:46 CET, Brent futures were down 1.6% at $114.88 a barrel and WTI was 1.9% lower at $101.29. The reference point is the live futures session after Brent rose 6.2% on Friday to its highest weekly close since mid-2022.
Asian indexes did not move in one direction. Reuters reported at 02:27 CET that the Nikkei 225 was down 0.43% at 62,425.47 while the broader Topix gained 0.48%. An earlier snapshot showed South Korea's KOSPI down 1.1%, Chinese blue chips down 1.0% and the MSCI Asia-Pacific index excluding Japan down 0.1%.
Currencies traded in narrow ranges. At 03:02 CET, the dollar index stood at 101.64, EUR/USD at 1.122 and USD/JPY at 156.920. Bitcoin was near $79,861 and ether near $2,310.99 in Google Finance snapshots at 05:22 CET. These are time-stamped observations, not forecasts for the rest of the day.
Why does the oil pullback matter?
Oil prices feed into transport, production and energy costs, so a large move can alter expectations for inflation and monetary policy. Monday's decline followed a strong Friday rise; it does not automatically reverse the broader trend.
Reuters linked the pullback to reports of diplomatic efforts aimed at de-escalation. That is sourced context, not a guarantee of further declines. New supply or geopolitical headlines could move prices in either direction.
Asia: one index does not tell the full story
A lower Nikkei alongside a higher Topix shows why sector weights matter. Reuters pointed to pressure from chip-related shares in the Nikkei while energy companies gained with oil prices still elevated.
The learning point is the mechanism: a price-weighted benchmark can move differently from a broader market index. One benchmark number should not be treated as a complete picture of every Japanese stock.
Currencies and central banks
The dollar eased slightly while the yen was near 156.920 per dollar in the Reuters snapshot. Currency moves can reflect changes in bond yields and rate expectations, but one session does not establish the next direction.
Official calendars confirm the Fed meeting on 27–28 October, the ECB meeting on 28–29 October and the Bank of Japan meeting on 29–30 October. The dates are facts; the decisions and market reactions remain unknown.
Crypto and scenarios for the day
Bitcoin and ether were lower in the morning snapshots. Crypto trades around the clock, but its move is not an automatic signal for equities, currencies or commodities.
Scenario, not forecast: if oil continues to ease, markets may trim some short-term inflation concern; if new supply disruptions emerge, pressure could return. Prodigy lets you practise observing these relationships with virtual money and simulated trades.
