RBNZ holds at 2.75% in a 4โ3 vote as Asia rises before the Fed
The Reserve Bank of New Zealand held its OCR at 2.75% by a 4โ3 vote. In the morning snapshot, the kiwi was down more than 1%, KOSPI gained more than 3%, the Nikkei rose 1.2%, and investors awaited today's Federal Reserve decision.
The most important new information this morning was the Reserve Bank of New Zealand's decision. The Committee voted 4โ3 to keep the official cash rate at 2.75%; three members preferred an increase to 3%. The RBNZ said further tightening may be required, but it remains conditional on incoming information. This is a fact from the central bank's release, not a Prodigy forecast.
The RBNZ said annual CPI inflation was 3.7% in the September quarter, down from 4.1% in June, while core inflation measures were near the top of the 1โ3% target band. Reuters reported that the New Zealand dollar fell more than 1% after the decision. The currency reaction illustrates how a gap between a decision and expectations can move prices, but it does not determine the next direction of NZD.
Asian equities were mostly higher. In a Reuters snapshot published at 02:44 CET on 28 October, the MSCI Asia-Pacific index excluding Japan was up 0.85%, the Nikkei gained 1.2% and KOSPI rose more than 3%. SK hynix reported KRW 104.6 trillion of revenue and KRW 83.3 trillion of operating profit for the third quarter; the company said operating profit increased 632% year on year. The index readings were intraday figures, not closing levels.
In currencies, the dollar index held near a two-week high at 102.37. The Australian dollar was up 0.25% at $0.7043 after inflation data: the Australian Bureau of Statistics reported annual CPI inflation of 4.3% in September, up from 4.0% in August. A higher reading by itself does not guarantee an RBA decision; the bank considers a wider set of information.
In commodities, Brent was up 0.47% at $114.42 a barrel in the same snapshot, WTI gained 0.55% to $100.45 and spot gold was near $4,057.95 an ounce. These are prices from a specific moment and can change during the day.
Crypto continued trading around the clock: in a later Reuters morning snapshot, bitcoin was near $80,736 and ether near $2,345. Crypto does not have to respond to the same factors as equities, currencies or commodities; the quoted levels are not a recommendation to buy or sell.
The Federal Reserve decision is scheduled for 19:00 CET today, with the press conference at 19:30 CET. These are confirmed times from the Federal Reserve calendar. The market scenario may depend on both the rate and the wording of the statement, but the decision and market reaction remain unknown. The ECB begins a two-day meeting today, while the Bank of Japan meets on 29โ30 October.
Why does a 4โ3 vote matter?
The rate alone does not show the full picture. A narrow majority means members assessed similar risks but differed on the timing of the response. Four members preferred to observe the effects of two earlier increases, while three wanted another 25-basis-point increase now.
The current decision and the vote split therefore both matter to markets. It does not automatically mean a December increase: the RBNZ explicitly made future action conditional on inflation, demand and global conditions.
How can a central-bank decision affect a currency?
A currency reacts to the difference between the outcome and what markets expected. If investors had anticipated a higher rate, an unchanged decision can reduce the currency's expected interest-rate advantage and trigger a decline. This is a mechanism, not a guaranteed direction.
Incoming data, central-bank communication, energy prices and global risk appetite can later matter more. We therefore describe the kiwi move as an observed morning fact, not a lasting trend.
What could influence the rest of the day?
The Federal Reserve decision is the main scheduled event. Markets may respond to the rate, the vote and the wording of the statement and press conference. Alphabet and Microsoft earnings after the Wall Street close may also change how investors assess returns on AI spending.
These are known calendar events, but their outcomes remain scenarios. Prodigy does not assume a market direction before the information is published.
How should a morning snapshot be read?
