US crude stocks fall by 3.06 million barrels: what changed this evening?
EIA released its new weekly report at 16:30 CEST: commercial crude stocks excluding the Strategic Petroleum Reserve fell to 412.517 million barrels. We explain the unit, oil's response, the open Wall Street session and bitcoin's separate clock.
On 21 October 2026 at 10:30 ET, or 16:30 CEST, the U.S. Energy Information Administration released data for the week ended 16 October. US commercial crude stocks excluding the Strategic Petroleum Reserve fell from 415.577 million to 412.517 million barrels.
The difference is 3.060 million barrels. This is a week-to-week inventory change, not the percentage change in oil prices, production or demand. Reuters reported that the draw was larger than the 0.820-million-barrel median expectation in its poll.
This is new information after the morning Japan trade story and the afternoon Randstad share move. Wall Street's regular session is open this evening, while crypto trades continuously; their snapshots use different reference points and do not prove one shared cause.
1. What exactly did EIA measure?
Series WCESTUS1 covers commercially held crude oil and excludes the Strategic Petroleum Reserve. Values are reported in thousand barrels: 412,517 thousand barrels equals 412.517 million. The previous reading was 415,577 thousand, so subtraction gives a 3,060-thousand-barrel decline.
The report describes the week ended 16 October even though it was released on 21 October. The observation date and publication date are different. Reuters' poll provides an expectations comparison, but that expectation is not a fact from EIA's report.
2. Why do lower stocks not guarantee higher oil prices?
A possible mechanism: a larger-than-expected inventory draw can be read as a tighter balance and may support prices. Supply, transport, conflict, demand and political negotiations operate at the same time.
Reuters reported at 16:50 CEST that Brent was up about 0.2% while WTI was down about 0.1% during the open session despite the inventory report. One number can matter without determining the price by itself. The snapshot is neither the day's close nor a live 20:00 quote.
3. Wall Street: earnings and an open session
The Associated Press reported at 12:40 ET, or 18:40 CEST, that the S&P 500 was up 0.6%, the Dow 0.4% and the Nasdaq Composite 1.2% from Tuesday's close. This is a dated snapshot from an open US regular session, not the final result.
AP and Reuters pointed to selected technology earnings and lower bond yields as supportive context. That does not prove every stock rose for the same reason. Meta and Tesla were due to report after the close, so before 20:00 CEST their results should not be presented as released.
4. Crypto uses a separate clock
At about 19:20 CEST, CoinDesk's price page displayed bitcoin near $83.4 thousand with a positive change. We did not verify the timestamp of the last individual trade or the complete methodology behind the displayed change, so this is an aggregator snapshot, not a guaranteed execution quote.
We found no independent evidence that EIA's report caused bitcoin's move. Inflation and rate expectations can be shared channels across assets, while crypto also has its own liquidity, flows and news. Timing alone does not establish causation.
5. A Max exercise: label before interpretation
For −3.06 million, write: commercial stocks excluding SPR, week ended 16 October, comparison with the previous week, released 21 October at 16:30 CEST. Only then write a possible mechanism and an alternative scenario.
